The Soloution
The impact of global warming is quite severe. There are, however, a large number of solutions.
Automobiles are a large contributor to global warming. Reducing the amount of greenhouse gases produced by automobile can significantly reduce the process of global warming. This can be accomplished by improving fuel efficiencies of cars and trucks. More importantly, biofuels can potentially play a large role in reducing the impacts of global warming.
What are biofuels?
Biofuels and conventional gasoline are the relatively same. Conventional gasoline are made from oil which are produced from plants that have been buried underground for millions of years, eventually turning into oil. The more contemporary version of oil is referred to as biofuels; these are made from vegetables, in particular corn, and go through a process where the starches and other molecules are broken down leaving behind ethanol. The ethanol can now be used as fuel for cars.
What is the disadvantage of ethanol?
Many environmentalists have said that ethanol can do more harm than good to the environment. Since ethanol is made from plants, it would require clearing millions of acres of forest to grow. Biofuels will also require pesticides and energy that comes from natural gas and fossil fuels to be grown.
Geothermal Energy
The roots of geothermal are geo and thermal. Geo means earth and thermal means heat. Therefore geothermal means heated by the earth. Geothermal energy can generate heat that can warm thousands of homes with out the use of fossil fuels. There are several advantages of geothermal energy, not only does geothermal energy eliminate the use of oil and coal but it emits about a sixth of the greenhouse gases as oil and coal. In addition, geothermal is available 365 days of the year while solar and wind energy availability is limited. The drawback of geothermal energy is the disposal of waist which may contain some toxic minerals.
Wind and solar
Most people are more familiar with wind and solar energy. In most cases, solar energy is more attainable because it is installed on house roofs and has the capacity to power an entire house. Wind farms are established in many parts of the United States and have the ability to power thousands of houses. The advantage of wind and solar energy is that they produce no greenhouse gases. The disadvantages of these technologies, however, are cost and space. Solar energy is only available during the day when the sun is brightest and may not be available on cloudy days. Wind energy is also only available when there is adequate wind to spin the turbine.
